* Digg

A logical extension shows that the top 100 Digg Users have contributed 14,249 stories to the homepage, or 56.41%. At Digg, a very select group of users is dominating the popular homepage content. Far from being a mass of opinion, Digg is instead showing, primarily, the content opinions of just a few, select folks.

In the blog world we have Tech Memeorandum, Digg, Reddit, and other recommendation and ranking services to help us find the most popular content. I use these services and find them very helpful. However, for me, the best sources for new interesting content are the blogs of respected opinion leaders like Om Malik, Robert Scoble, Richard McManus, Brad Feld, Fred Wilson, Dare Obsanjo, Michael Parekh, and others. For me these bloggers are like editors or filters for the best information.

Essentially it's a peer ranking system and Reddit is hoping it'll differentiate them from Digg - and perhaps get Reddit some of Digg's huge user base. While Digg doesn't have an explicit reputation system, it does give users rankings according to how many homepage diggs they get. The top diggers page lists the users who have the most homepage diggs and also lists their 'homepage ratio'. Digg's system does seem to be a populist method of ranking users - because users only get a good ranking if their stories prove to be popular enough to make the Digg homepage. So perhaps Reddit's karma system is something that Digg should look at to reduce groupthink and spam?

In Part 1 of my interview with digg founder Kevin Rose, we discussed digg's popularity, reputation systems and recent issues with GroupThink. In the final part of this interview, Kevin and I talk about digg's battle with spammers and the upcoming release of new personalization features, plus an API.

Since that last post on "News 2.0" sites got a fair amount of feedback, perhaps people would be interested in a quick survey of features of the competitive environment for the 20 or so companies in the general area. I'd be doing this anyway as part of touching up our business plan, so I might as well share it. Part of the inspiration for this comes from a graph illustrating a story on Publish.com about Gather.com and its competitors.

Digg also hopes to use some recent funding to expand its coverage. In October, the company received $2.8 million from Greylock Partners, Omidyar Network, Netscape founder Marc Andreessen and others. Besides buying servers and adding to its staff, Digg hopes to use the funding to broaden its appeal to a more mainstream crowd by adding new categories like business, sports and politics. Mr. Adelson said he hopes the expansion will boost the company's revenue, which comes entirely from text advertisements. He said the site is profitable, but declined to disclose financial information.

But the most notable feature is the Periodic Refresh. It used to update at a leisurely pace of once every few seconds, and is now a kind of "Hyper Refresh" with updates around each second. It certainly has a nice live feel to it, but the links are rarely stationary long enough to click on them! To compensate, there's a pause button, perhaps an Ajax first? FactoryCity draws the video game analogy: "I'm all for a more interactive web, but Frogger never seemed like an ideal interface for consuming news!".
